This post walks eastward, along the north side of Queen St. in Niagara Falls, Ont., from Crysler Ave. towards St. Clair Ave.

*** click on photos to enlarge! ***

below: Sept. 1966 - Swalm's Appliances, with a red metal awning, was on the north-east corner of Queen St. and Crysler Ave. in Niagara Falls Ont. The A. Leon furniture store was to the right.

above: Jun.28, 2008, same storefront being renovated into an art gallery.
*
below: Oct.4, 1964 - at the north-east corner of Queen St. and Crysler Ave. is Swalm's television and appliances, with a striped canvas awning over the door and windows. Next to the right (east) is A. Leon's furniture, with a neon sign overhanging the sidewalk.
above: same view, Dec.22, 2008.
*
below: Oct.4, 1964 - continuing eastward along Queen St., at the far left (west) is the corner of A. Leons's furniture shop. Next is Ostrander's Jewellers; then Bata shoes, then at the far right a corner of the Sally Shops

above: same view, Jan.29, 2009. The Camera Place is where Bata and the Sally Shops were.
*
below: Jan.8, 1958 - continuing eastward along Queen St., the Sally Shops is at the far left, the next shop is unclear, then Altridge Jewellers, then Singer, then at the far right is a storefront with possibly 'Robert's' on the sign.

above: same location as above, Oct.4, 1964 - the store at the far left (at 535 Queen St.) still remains unclear. Above the door at the centre of the left building is a sign advertising "jeweller expert repairs". To the left of the Maher Shoe store (former Altridge) is also a sign hanging over the sidewalk indicating that a jeweller is upstairs. The Singer storefront is in the same location as seen previously, and at the far right is Mitchell's, where the 'Robert's' was seen previously.
*
below: same location as above, May 1965 - the Sally Shops (..again, another Queen St. storefront with the classic vitrolite background/stainless steel lettered signage!) is seen at the far left; next (where the un-known shop was) is now a Reward shop; next Maher shoes; and then Singer.
In 1977 Sam The Record Man was located where Singer's had been.

above: same view, Dec.22, 2008 - the Camera Place is where the Sally Shops was; the denture shop is where Reward was; the payday loan shop is where Maher was; the real estate office at the far right is where Singer was.
*
below: Oct.4, 1964 - continuing eastward along Queen St., Singer is at the left, Mitchell's of Niagara Falls is next door, followed by Tip Top Tailors, with its large neon sign protruding from the second storey facade overhanging the sidewalk. Many cities don't allow signs being placed this way over sidewalks any more. At the far right is seen Agnew-Surpass shoes.

above: same view, Dec.22, 2008 - at the far left, the payday place is where Maher was; the real estate office is where Singer was; the 'A to Z' convenience store is where Mitchell's once was; the Queen Muse, with the red sign at the right, is where Tip Top Tailor's once was.
above: Jul.9, 2009 - the A to Z convenience store is closing
*
below: Oct.4, 1964 - Agnew-Surpass Family Footwear is at the left (at 515 Queen St.), with a lit sign overhanging the sidewalk. Upstairs is Beneficial Finance; advertising painted on the upper window reads "Loans, $50 to $2500, Signature, Auto, Furniture". There is a neon sign also suspended over the sidewalk at the second-storey level. Next store to the right, with Vaughan's on the window, seems vacant - this was 513 Queen St, which in 1932 had housed a Dominion Store. At the far right is Reitman's, at 511 Queen St - in 1932, W.R. Price Men's Wear was here).

above: same building as above, Dec.22, 2008 - the storefront at the left is where Agnew-Surpass had once been; in the middle is where Vaughan's was; at the right is where Reitman's had been.
above: Jun.4, 2009, same view as above - at the left, Russell's flower shop is now located where Agnew-Surpass shoes once was. above: Oct.4, 1964 - continuing east, Reitman's is at the far left, also seen is the Reitman's neon sign overhanging the sidewalk. Next (at 501-503 Queen St.) was a Dominion grocery store. above: same view, Dec.22, 2008. The Reitman's had once been in the storefront at the far left.
above: Jul.9, 2009 - a new plastic sign is installed where the Dominion store once was.
above: Oct.4, 1964 - At the far left, seen with the coined brick, is the corner of the building that had the Dominion store; then we see the Tamblyn drug store, then the Royal Bank building. At the far right is seen the west corner of the Wallace's building. above: same location, Dec.22, 2008, seen from a little farther back. In the centre, The Royal Bank has expanded to its west, into the space that once housed Tamblyn Drugs. To the left is where the Dominion had once been. To the right (east) is the former Wallace's building.

below: Oct.4, 1964 - Wallace's Dry Goods, which was on the north-west corner of Queen St. and St. Clair Ave (# 481-485 Queen St.) had a nice vitrolite facade.
above: same building, Feb.8, 2009.

below: Sept. 1966 - corner view of Wallace's Dry Goods in colour showing its cream and black vitrolite facade with the bold red accents. Nice!

above: Feb.3, 2009, same view.
